“Who here in this room is not happy. All the time. Sometimes happy sometimes not not happy right okay. Every single hand.
Almost anyone here. Who is happy most of time like 90 or more great okay so it s doable huh. So some of us actually can achieve happiness. Most of the time some of us are not doing that obviously.
Which basically means you re missing your target. Because you know if it s doable. Then you know you re you re not doing really well. I mean we would rate you as meet expectations right have you ever gone looking for your keys.
When you had them in your pocket. All along right..
I mean people with glasses would know that very well so yeah all right you can relate to that you put them on and then you look for them everywhere. And you just can t find them and you know you dive under the sofa and you shout at home like honey. Where are my glasses right and you know how can you find them when you ve had when you have them on how can you find your keys. When they re with you all along we keep looking for happiness.
Outsiders. We keep looking for things that make us happy. While the truth is this every one of you every child that has ever been born is born with the default setting set to happy if we re fed if we re safe if we re loved if there is no reason for us to be unhappy. What s the default setting.
The default setting is happy and what happens truly similar to what you do with your android phones and iphones you know you get them out of the box and they re set to work properly. We come out of the box and we set to be happy then you start installing weird apps. You know and your battery life goes to four hours right and you have to charge three times a day while at a young age. I was extremely successful as a businessman and a you know an entrepreneur and a day trader and what have you i was installing things in my life.
I was trying to buy a beautiful car or you know get the you know whatever expensive shirts or suits or whatever. I was trying to install more apps to make me happy and i wasn t because truly what i should have done was removed the apps..
That made me unhappy in a very very interesting way happiness. Truly is the absence of unhappiness. I want to do a quick test with you just in a quick one minute. I want you to do two tasks at the same time i want you to succeed at both tasks both are very simple tasks so the first one i apologize i want to in 10 seconds 20 seconds close your eyes and remember something that makes you unhappy i want you to turn it over in your brain.
Until you re miserable can you do that for me. No. No don t laugh. I want you miserable right now keep that unhappy thought in your head please try to continue to be unhappy and i want you to juice just do a simple arithmetic task.
Which is to add the numbers on the screen or no no no hold on why are you laughing. You re supposed to be unhappy. At least add the numbers as you can please anyone added. The numbers.
No anyone remained unhappy failed twice like bravo right so so what did i do here you were okay you were smiling everything was okay you were engaged in the conversation. Then i asked you to think of something that made you unhappy you thought about something that made you unhappy what happened boom immediately unhappiness on the mound right and then i distracted you i stopped you thinking about what it is that you were thinking about simple as that and what happened boom happiness on the map..
But it is pretty interesting because it s not the event the event you were thinking about happened already if you had not thought about it you wouldn t be unhappy you know what that means it means your happiness equation looks like this the way you think about the events of your life versus your expectations. I d like to introduce you to ally ally. My son and my best friend and my mentor we developed my happiness model together because i lee truly was the happiest person i ever met he had that peace to him that you could not miss and ally i think was training me all my life with our happiness model because unfortunately in 2014. We lost tally to to a preventable human error so ali came to visit us in dubai and he was diagnosed with an appendix inflammation and unfortunately they made several mistakes in a row and within four hours.
We moved from you know planning the best vacation. We can think of to losing our child and to lose a child. I know those of you who have children will know is the hardest thing ever you know it s until today. I struggled to understand what it really means i struggled to understand the exact feeling that i m feeling i just don t have words for it there is no other event in my life where i felt the same way and there was every reason to be miserable to be honest when when we lost ali.
But we were not we were okay i wouldn t say we were happy just to be very specific. But we were peaceful we spent the next few days. You know being visited by friends until his memorial. Where we had thousands of people who would walk in sad crying and we would hug them and explain to them what we understood about happiness.
What we understood about death and life and they would smile and go around our house. While looking at pictures of ali..
Smiling all over the walls. And you know and and they would leave happy. And if you didn t know the background to the event. You would have thought it maybe on his birthday or something most of my friends came to me.
And said. You should probably write this down you know in it resonated. Very well and it s clearly working so i looked at the book as the model. But the businessmen that i am and with my love for ali it sort of set myself a bigger mission if you want i give myself a target to try and make 10 million people happy and you know.
While it doesn t bring ali back i sort of felt that if we can share all these model with 10 million people and make them happy then the world is a slightly better place applause music music. ” ..
